such new beginnings
like the leaves of a burr oak
remind us of hope
And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit whom he has given us.

I love those fresh soft colored little green spring leaves coming out of what looked like a dead branch…hope indeed David

Yes! And some of these oaks have been regenerating like this for decades and decades. There used to be a huge one behind my church. When soft ground and a wind storm brought it down, it was over 200 years old.

There is one on the old farmstead (which is across the road from us) that was supposedly there when it was originally settled, so 200 years makes sense. The only other things I know of lasting that long is a white pine (original) and probably some giant snapping turtles in the lake.

Before the old oak fell, one of our lawn mowing volunteers measured around the trunk (about shoulder high). It was 17 1/2 feet around! Taking this measurement, I was able to use a formula to estimate its approximate age. As I recall, it was 220 something.

It’s one of my favorites, as well, Joy. Oaks grow slowly but live for such a long time. Gary takes such good nature shots!

I love how the Lord plants in His creation tangible reminders of hope.
