Autumn’s Last Leaf

A micro poem about resilience.

the brisk autumn breeze

unwavering frigid rain

last leaf on the tree

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

2 Corinthians 4:16 (NIV)

This haiku was inspired by the first song on Willie Nelson’s 76th studio album, “Last Leaf on the Tree.” and “The Last Leaf,” a poem by Oliver Wendell Holmes SR. and a short story called The Last Leaf, by O. Henry.

I'm just a regular guy who was
tempted to lose all hope but did not. It was God who made the difference.

YES!! You’re welcome, David! Let’s hang on to that positivity. I thought of you today…
I was substitute teaching and I had a “challenging” situation. After school, the principal asked if I’d like to work for her. I told her my situation, the stage 4 cancer, my Dad, sons, and she understood why I only substitute (and part-time, few days). Good leadership is wonderful and I’d definitely sub for you if I lived near you! Your faith and positivity inspire me!

I’m not surprised the principal of the school where you sub recognized you as a leader, Karla! And, because of your attitude, she had no inkling of your delicate circumstances. Of course I would love to have you as a sub at my school. And of course would happily serve in yours!
